What It Means to Be Farmstead
What Farmstead Cheese Means at Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese
These days, the word โfarmsteadโ gets thrown around. But at Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese, itโs more than a label โ itโs a way of life. For us, farmstead means we milk our own cows, make our own cheese, and deliver it directly to you. Thatโs the true definition of farmstead cheese in Wisconsin.
๐ From Cow to Curds on One Property
Most cheese companies buy milk from outside farms. We donโt. Instead, we raise our own herd, milk them on-site, and transfer the milk just steps away to our cheesemaking facility. Often, that milk becomes cheese within hours. This farmstead process ensures unmatched freshness and full transparency โ from pasture to plate.
๐ง Why Farmstead Cheese Matters
When you choose farmstead cheese, you get benefits that big dairy operations canโt match:
- Unmatched freshness from milk processed the same day
- Full traceability โ we know exactly where our milk comes from
- Superior flavor and consistency in every batch
Because we know our cows and their care, we know our milk. And that means you can taste the difference in every bite of Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese.
๐ฟ Committed to Quality and Integrity
Being farmstead isnโt just about control โ itโs about doing things the right way. For us, that means avoiding shortcuts, even if the process is harder or slower. We put flavor, freshness, and trust first in everything we make.
This dedication reflects Wisconsinโs dairy heritage and the values that built Americaโs Dairyland. Learn more about Wisconsinโs farmstead cheesemaking tradition.
๐งก The Ronโs Difference
In a crowded marketplace, our promise is simple:
- Farm-fresh milk from our own cows
- Handcrafted, small-batch Wisconsin cheese
- Family-run values, rooted in honesty and care
Thatโs what farmstead means to us โ and why customers keep choosing Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese.
Farm Fresh. Handcrafted. Wisconsin Proud.

What Makes Ronโs Cheese Different?
Thereโs no shortage of cheese brands in Wisconsin. But at Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese, we take a different path. Our commitment to farmstead cheese in Wisconsin means we use milk from our own herd, craft small batches with care, and focus on authentic flavor that keeps customers coming back.
๐ Farmstead Cheese in Wisconsin: Fresh from Our Herd
We donโt just source milk โ we produce it ourselves. Our cheese begins with milk from our own cows, raised on family farmland in Kewaunee County. This farmstead approach guarantees freshness, transparency, and quality at every step. By keeping the process in-house, we eliminate middlemen and ensure every bite reflects Wisconsinโs proud dairy heritage.
๐ง Small-Batch Wisconsin Cheese Craftsmanship
Unlike industrial operations, we produce cheese in small, carefully monitored batches. Every batch is tested, tasted, and crafted by experienced cheesemakers who know how to balance flavor and texture. This dedication to craftsmanship results in cheese thatโs consistent, fresh, and unmistakably Wisconsin.
โ๏ธ Signature Wisconsin Cheese Products
Our lineup goes beyond the basics. Signature products like Snow Cheddar โ our naturally white cheddar โ and our award-winning Mozzarella Cheese Whips showcase recipes weโve developed and perfected in-house. These arenโt rebranded commodities; theyโre original Wisconsin cheeses, crafted from scratch and refined over time.
๐ค Family-Owned, Wisconsin Proud
Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese is still a family-run company, and we take pride in doing things the right way. That means honest labeling, careful packaging, and customer-first values. If a product isnโt good enough for our own family table, it never leaves our creamery.
๐ฑ The Ronโs Difference
In a crowded market, our difference is simple:
- Farm-fresh milk from our own herd
- Handcrafted small-batch cheese you can trust
- Wisconsin pride in every curd, whip, and wheel
Thatโs what sets us apart โ and why people keep choosing Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese.
Farm Fresh. Handcrafted. Wisconsin Proud.

๐ From Distributor to Dairy: How Ronโs Found Its True Flavor
Early 2000s Storefront view of Ron’s Wisconsin Cheese Retail Store Before we crafted our own cheese, we delivered it.
Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese started as a local distributor โ sourcing cheese from other makers and getting it into the hands of small shops, delis, and families across Wisconsin.
๐ฆ Built on Relationships
Ronโs earned trust not just by showing up, but by caring about quality, freshness, and consistency. We became a household name โ even without making the cheese ourselves.
๐ง The Turning Point
In 2015, we took the leap. Pagelโs Ponderosa Dairy acquired Ronโs and began producing cheese using milk from our own cows. We went from distributor to true farmstead cheesemaker โ bringing every part of the process under one roof.
๐ A New Era Begins
That transition allowed us to develop signature products like Snow Cheddar, expand into string cheese and cheese curds, and introduce Wisconsin to the fresh, full-flavor cheese we had always dreamed of making.

A Legacy of Cheese: How Wisconsin Became the Dairy State
Wisconsinโs love affair with cheese runs deep โ and itโs no coincidence the state proudly wears the title Americaโs Dairyland. From humble beginnings to a booming, world-class industry, the story of Wisconsin cheese is one of hard work, heritage, and flavor thatโs recognized around the globe.
๐งโ๐พ It Started with the Land
In the mid-1800s, European immigrants โ especially from Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands โ brought centuries-old cheesemaking traditions to Wisconsin. They quickly saw the landโs potential. With a cool climate, lush pastures, and abundant fresh water, Wisconsin was perfect for raising dairy cows and producing rich, high-quality milk.
As small dairy farms spread across the state, families began turning surplus milk into cheese. It wasnโt just a practical way to preserve milk โ it became a staple of local diets and a source of pride for farming communities. Cheesemaking soon wove itself into the cultural fabric of Wisconsin life.
๐ง An Industry Takes Shape
By the early 20th century, Wisconsin had surged to the top of U.S. cheese production โ and it hasnโt let go of the title since. Rural cheese factories flourished, and skilled cheesemakers trained new generations through hands-on apprenticeships. Innovation in aging techniques, flavor development, and equipment design kept Wisconsin ahead of the curve.
Today, the state produces over 600 varieties, types, and styles of cheese, from classic cheddars and squeaky curds to award-winning artisan creations. Wisconsin also boasts more Master Cheesemakers than anywhere else in the world, ensuring each wheel and wedge meets the highest standards of quality.
๐งก Carrying the Legacy at Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese
At Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese, weโre honored to be part of this rich cheesemaking heritage. From our farmstead operation in Kewaunee County to our family-run production facility in Luxemburg, every batch we make carries forward the values that built Wisconsinโs reputation: quality ingredients, skilled craftsmanship, and local pride.
We use milk from our own cows, ensuring freshness and consistency from pasture to plate. Our lineup โ from Snow Cheddar to squeaky fresh cheese curds โ reflects the same dedication Wisconsin cheesemakers have shown for generations.
For us, cheesemaking isnโt just a business; itโs a way to honor our roots, support our community, and share the unmistakable flavor of Wisconsin with cheese lovers everywhere.
๐ Fun Facts About Wisconsin Cheese
- Wisconsin produces over 3.4 billion pounds of cheese annually.
- The state was the first in the U.S. to require cheesemaker licensing (since 1994).
- Only Wisconsin offers the rigorous Master Cheesemaker Program โ the โPh.D. of cheese.โ

Whether youโre a lifelong Wisconsinite or a cheese-loving visitor, one thing is certain โ when you enjoy Wisconsin cheese, youโre tasting over 175 years of tradition, innovation, and passion.

Before the Farm: The Early History of Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese
Early 2000s Storefront view of Ron’s Wisconsin Cheese Retail Store From a small-town cheese distributor to a beloved Wisconsin brand.
Long before โfarm-to-tableโ became a buzzword โ and before cheese curds became a foodie favorite โ Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese was steadily building its reputation. With each delivery, the company earned recognition for quality, consistency, and old-fashioned Midwest service.
The story begins in the small town of Luxemburg, Wisconsin. It didnโt start on a dairy farm but in a modest facility with one mission: bring great Wisconsin cheese to more people.
๐ง A Business Built on Distribution and Trust
In its earliest days, Ronโs wasnโt making cheese. Instead, the company partnered with local cheesemakers and dairy cooperatives to distribute fresh Wisconsin cheese to retailers, small shops, and families across the region.
From deli counters to grocery coolers, Ronโs products became a familiar sight throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Reliable service and consistent quality built trust with both cheesemakers and customers โ relationships that still exist today.
Whether delivering squeaky curds to a corner store or assembling holiday gift boxes, Ronโs earned loyalty by showing up, keeping it local, and always delivering flavor.
๐ป A Familiar Name in Northeast Wisconsin
By the early 2000s, Ronโs had become a well-known name in the region. This recognition didnโt come from flashy advertising but from word of mouth.
Local grocers trusted Ronโs to keep shelves stocked. Families recognized the red-and-white labels in deli cases. Cheese lovers knew they could rely on Ronโs for a true taste of Wisconsin.
Still, something was missing โ a deeper connection to the cheese itself.
๐ A New Chapter Begins
In 2015, Pagelโs Ponderosa Dairy saw an opportunity to bring Ronโs full circle โ from distributor to farmstead producer. The Pagel family acquired the company and moved production operations to their own dairy farm.
Now, the same company that once sourced cheese from others could craft it themselves, using milk from cows raised on their land.
It was a natural next step โ a trusted distributor joining forces with one of Wisconsinโs most respected dairy families to create a true farm-to-table brand.
๐ค Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Today, Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese carries forward two legacies:
- The dependable, community-first values the company was built on.
- The craftsmanship, care, and freshness of a farmstead cheesemaking operation.
Weโre proud of where we started โ and even prouder of where weโre headed.

How Snow Cheddar Was Born: A Vision Turned Wisconsin Favorite
Ron’s Wisconsin Cheese Snow Cheddar Products Snow Cheddar didnโt happen by accident. Instead, it began with a challenge, a vision, and the determination of one man to create something extraordinary. At Ronโs Wisconsin Cheese, weโve always been proud of our farmstead roots. However, John T. Pagelโfounder of Pagelโs Ponderosa Dairy and creator of Snow Cheddarโwanted to leave his own mark on Wisconsin cheesemaking.
The True Story Behind Snow Cheddar
From the start, John was determined to create a signature cheese that could be made exclusively at his farmstead cheese operation. He began by tasting several types of cheese and meeting with industry experts. Through these conversations and tastings, he identified the exact flavors, textures, and qualities he wanted in his creation.
With that clear vision, John worked closely with skilled cheesemakers to craft a recipe that would deliver those qualities. Together, they perfected a cheddar with a creamy texture, balanced sharpness, and pure, natural flavor.
Why the Name โSnowโ
Choosing the name โSnowโ came naturally. John wanted to showcase the cheeseโs natural, uncolored appearance, free from the orange color used in many traditional cheddars. Its snowy white color reflects not only Wisconsin winters but also the authenticity of farmstead cheesemaking.
By keeping the cheeseโs color pure, John ensured Snow Cheddar would stand out for its craftsmanship and quality.
From Farmstead Vision to Wisconsin Favorite
Once the first batches came out of the creamery, customers responded instantly. They loved the smooth melt, rich flavor, and striking natural color. Word spread quickly, and Snow Cheddar moved from a new experiment to a must-have cheese for families and food lovers.
Today, Snow Cheddar has become one of our most requested cheeses. Itโs perfect for a grilled cheese sandwich, adds depth to macaroni and cheese, and elevates any cheese board. Every wheel still comes from fresh milk from our farm and is crafted with the same care John poured into the very first batch.
A Legacy in Every Bite
Snow Cheddar is more than a productโitโs a true testament to John T. Pagelโs dedication to producing authentic, high-quality cheese on his farmstead operation. Every decisionโfrom the selection of flavors to the choice to keep its natural ivory colorโreflects his passion for cheesemaking.
If youโve never tried Snow Cheddar, now is the time. Itโs a cheese born from vision, crafted with care, and loved across Wisconsin and beyond.
Taste what tradition, intention, and farmstead craftsmanship can deliver.
