Cheese FAQ’s

Everything You’ve Ever Wondered About Cheese — Answered with our FAQ’s

Whether you’re new to cheese or a longtime curd connoisseur, we’ve put together answers to the questions we hear most. From how cheese is made to how to store it, here’s your go-to guide for all your cheese FAQ’s.

What makes cheese “farmstead”?

Farmstead cheese is made on the same farm where the milk comes from. At Ron’s, we raise the cows, milk them, and make the cheese all in one place. This gives us full control over freshness, quality, and flavor — and you can taste the difference.

Why do cheese curds squeak?

It’s all about the freshness. When cheese curds are fresh, the proteins rub against your teeth and create that signature squeak. As the curds age and lose moisture, the squeak fades — so the louder the squeak, the fresher the curd!

How long does your cheese last?

It depends on the product:

  • Cheese curds: Best enjoyed within a few days; refrigerate for up to 4 weeks.
  • Aged cheddar: Keeps for several months when sealed tightly in the fridge.
  • String cheese and whips: Typically last 4–6 weeks refrigerated.

To keep cheese fresh, wrap it in parchment or wax paper, then place it in a zip-top bag or sealed container.

Can I freeze cheese?

Yes — with some care. Hard cheeses like cheddar can be frozen for 1–2 months. Just expect a slightly crumbly texture when thawed.

What’s the difference between mild, medium, and sharp cheddar?

It comes down to aging:

  • Mild cheddar: Aged 1–3 months for a soft, creamy flavor.
  • Medium cheddar: Aged 3–6 months with more tang.
  • Sharp cheddar: Aged 6–12+ months for bold, complex flavor.
  • Extra sharp or aged cheddar: Aged 2+ years for a crumbly texture and rich, nutty character.

Is Ron’s cheese gluten-free?

Yes! All our cheeses are naturally gluten-free. We don’t add wheat-based ingredients, so they’re safe for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

Do you use pasteurized milk?

Yes. We use pasteurized milk in all our cheese products to ensure safety and consistent quality.

How should I serve cheese?

Let your cheese rest at room temperature for 20–30 minutes before serving. Cold cheese can dull the flavor — allowing it to warm slightly brings out the full richness and aroma.

Can I order cheese online?
