What Makes Cheese ‘Farmstead’?
We often say our cheese is “farmstead,” but what does that actually mean? To us, farmstead cheese isn’t just a label — it’s a promise. A commitment to doing things the right way, the real way, and the Ron’s way.
So today, we’re breaking it down: what makes cheese “farmstead,” and why it matters to us — and to you.
🧀 1. It All Starts with the Milk
Farmstead cheese is made using milk from a single farm — often from the cheesemaker’s own herd. At Ron’s, every batch of cheese begins with milk from our third-generation family dairy in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. We know our cows. We care for them. And we trust the quality of every drop of milk they give.
🛠️ 2. Made and Aged Right on the Farm
Unlike factory-made cheese, farmstead cheese is crafted, aged, and packaged at the same location where the milk is produced. That means fewer steps, fewer hands, and more control over quality — from pasture to package.
💛 3. Handcrafted in Small Batches
Our team doesn’t just run machines — they stir, stretch, press, and package every batch with care. That attention to detail shows in the squeak of our curds, the creaminess of our spreads, and the flavor of every cheddar block we sell.
🌾 4. Rooted in the Land
Being a farmstead operation means we’re deeply connected to the land we live and work on. From the crops we grow for feed to the water and soil we preserve, sustainability isn’t a buzzword — it’s part of our daily life.
🧡 5. You Can Taste the Difference
Fresh milk, expert hands, fewer steps — it all adds up to cheese that’s full of flavor and truly one of a kind. Whether it’s your first bite or your hundredth, farmstead cheese just tastes better.
