Behind the Scenes of Boot Camp: Where Agriculture Comes to Life

Every summer at Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy, something exciting rolls onto the farm, carloads of curious kids, eager to learn, explore, and get their boots dirty. Our Boot Camp program is more than just a few days on the farm; it’s an experience built to connect the next generation with modern agriculture in a hands-on, unforgettable way.

For four action-packed days, middle school students step into the world of dairy farming and agriculture, seeing firsthand what it takes to help feed communities and care for animals, land, and people every single day.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Boot Camp, learning doesn’t happen behind a desk. Campers rotate through hands-on activities that allow them to experience agriculture from every angle. From helping care for calves and learning about herd health, to climbing into equipment and seeing the technology behind modern farming, every day brings something new.

Students get the opportunity to:

  • Learn how cows are cared for and monitored
  • Explore the role of technology in modern dairy farming
  • See where cattle feed comes from and how crops are grown
  • Experience the journey from the farm to food products
  • Meet industry professionals and learn about careers in agriculture
  • Work together through team-building activities and challenges

For some campers, it’s their very first time stepping onto a working dairy farm. Questions are encouraged, curiosity is celebrated, and every activity is designed to create a welcoming environment where kids can learn by doing.

More Than Just Farming

While agriculture is at the center of Boot Camp, the program is also about building confidence, teamwork, leadership, and friendships. Campers spend the week working together, trying new things, and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

One of the most rewarding parts of the week is watching campers arrive shy and uncertain on Monday morning, then leave Thursday afternoon smiling, confident, and excited about everything they learned.

The relationships built during the week — between campers, leaders, employees, and volunteers — are what truly make Boot Camp special.

Showing Modern Agriculture

Agriculture today looks very different than it did generations ago, and Boot Camp gives students a real look into how innovation and sustainability shape the dairy industry.

Throughout the week, campers learn how farms use:

  • Technology to monitor animal health and comfort
  • Sustainable farming practices to care for the environment
  • Equipment and innovation to improve efficiency
  • Teamwork across many departments to keep operations moving

By opening our doors and sharing what happens behind the scenes, we hope to bridge the gap between consumers and agriculture while inspiring the next generation of leaders.

A Week We Look Forward To Every Year

Boot Camp has become one of our favorite traditions because it reflects what Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy is all about, education, community, teamwork, and growing together for a better tomorrow.

Watching kids light up while learning about farming reminds us why sharing our story matters. Whether campers leave wanting to work in agriculture someday or simply with a better understanding of where their food comes from, we know the experience leaves a lasting impact.

To all of our campers, families, leaders, volunteers, and employees who help make Boot Camp possible — thank you for being part of something truly special.

We can’t wait for another summer of learning, laughter, teamwork, and memories on the farm!
